Explore The surfSkate Criterias established By WSSL
Evaluating the performance of a professional surfskate athlete correctly is not an easy task for just anyone. Check in detail the main evaluation criteria established by the WSSL – World SurfSkate League.
Above all, you need to consider that the primary foundation of the new SurfSkate modality is to “express through a surfsimulator the maximum surf reality“, never forget this.
My accumulated experience over more than 10 years of diligently practicing surfskate, with countless relentless attempts to increasingly replicate surfing on concrete, motivated me to take a moment to deeply reflect on what the main characteristics of surfskate would be and how to objectively classify / measure all of this.
Therefore, in July 2017, I developed the first Official SurfSkate Regulation with evaluative prerogatives in an attempt to organize the first World SurfSkate Championship that year.

The Main SurfSkate Criteria
In accordance with the global institutionalization of WSSL, an official SurfSkate evaluation method was established consisting of just 4 main criteria.
We will delve deeply into each of the 4 Main SurfSkate Criteria, among various other subjective aspects to be analyzed! These criteria have been meticulously formulated to recognize, through the surf simulator, a faithful reproduction of surfing.
Wave Reading
Involves evaluating the athlete’s creative sense of direction and their commitment to best explore the progressive & sinusoidal base / lip rail.
The athlete’s utmost efficiency is considered when navigating through maneuverable sessions by authentically replicating surfing on solid waves.
All SurfSkate tracks offer strategic points where the athlete, through their creative interpretation of wave reading, can build more speed, mimic unique surfing movements, perform more maneuvers, diversify them, and even shape them from subtle to radical based on the layout of the surfskate park.
Body Expression
It generally involves evaluating the athlete’s bodily aspects in relation to their technical efficiency and replication of movements similar to surfing on concrete. In addition to efficiency and similarity, the biomechanics of the most assertive movements will be considered as one of the relevant sub-criteria of Body Expression.
Factors of Body Expression considered:
- Compression and decompression at the right moment of maneuvers
- Flexibility and impulses through the lower limbs
- Control and consistency of movements of the upper limbs
- Direction through shoulders and head
- Progressiveness and traction through the elbow
- Plasticity in top turns
- Refined style in continuity of movement
- Posture overall, especially at the critical moment of the maneuver.
The aim of this “Body Expression” evaluation criterion is to encourage athletes to practice / reproduce the techniques applied in surfing through the SurfSimulator.
It’s only now, with the elastic potential and rotation angle offered by the latest flexible trucks, that athletes are enabled to perform responsive turns, dynamic movements, and body expressions extremely similar to surfing.
Trick Variation
It consists of evaluating the athlete’s performance in relation to the portfolio of maneuvers similar to surfing that will be executed during their presentation.
This “Trick Variation” criterion aims to showcase the detailed technical applications of the SurfSkater from various perspectives.
For this evaluation, effort towards commitment and consistency in maneuvers is considered as sub-criteria.
Radicality
It consists of evaluating the degree of difficulty of SurfSkate maneuvers within the comprehensive scope of related sub-criteria.
- Speed
- Strength
- Power
- Precision
- Radius of the maneuver
The goal is to drive the progressive development of SurfSkate through the assessment of radical maneuvers that are extremely similar to surfing.
Conclusion
Establishing a Global SurfSkate Regulation based on theoretical intelligence and practical experiences on which main criteria should be evaluated for the new SurfSkate discipline, propagating transparently and with valuable freely accessible content on this subject, makes WSSL an internationally recognized organization worldwide.
That said, I now invite you to also take a moment and reflect on…
In your opinion, What are the most important criteria to be evaluated in the SurfSkate modality?
Certainly, it will fit subjectively into one of the 4 categories of the main criteria of the SurfSkate discipline.
