Full Guide: Survive a SurfSkate WipeOut
In this lesson, you will learn how to fall to the ground while riding a surfsimulator without getting hurt!
Falling techniques are fundamental skills in SurfSkate as they play a crucial role in maintaining the physical integrity of the athletes.
In the discipline of SurfSkate, athletes are exposed to significant levels of speed, and due to the front truck of the surfsimulator being flexible to provide responsive turns, this also makes the athletes inherently more vulnerable.
Therefore, it is necessary for surfskaters to know how to properly cushion falls to avoid serious injuries.
Training for cushioning falls can serve both to prevent accidents during SurfSkate practice and for the development of human self-preservation skills that are extremely important in various everyday situations.
The ability to cushion the impact of falls on the ground provides athletes with more courage and confidence against feelings of fear and hesitation, allowing them to stay more focused on the execution of the maneuver.
Effective fall cushioning involves the gradual dissipation of impact through strategic regions of our body, thus minimizing pressure on vulnerable areas such as the head, neck, and joints.
Proper fall cushioning techniques help distribute the impact force evenly across the body, avoiding points of excessive pressure and reducing the risk of traumatic injuries in specific areas, such as shoulders or spine.
When muscles are tense, the impact of a fall is transmitted directly to the body, increasing the risk of injuries. Muscular relaxation does not mean lack of control; on the contrary, it allows for a more effective distribution and absorption of the impact. Therefore, it is crucial to keep the muscles relaxed throughout the process.
The ability to absorb impact is the essence of fall cushioning. This is fundamentally achieved through bending the knees and hips, allowing the joints to act as natural shock absorbers. You should also use your hands and arms to distribute and channel the impact of falls gradually across a larger body area.
Aware of the key information, now let’s put it into practice the main teachings through this comprehensive full guide explaining the step-by-step: How To Survive a SurfSkate WipeOut?

Basic Falling Techniques
We will utilize the certified falling techniques derived from Judo, adapting them to specific circumstances related to SurfSkate, to efficiently protect primarily your vital organs and vulnerable joints. Check it out!
Front Fall At Low Speed (Mae-Ukemi)
There is no doubt that during any SurfSkate fall, the first thing you need to protect is the impact of your head on the surface, so it is highly advisable to wear a helmet.
In this case, during an unexpected frontal fall, you will need to cushion the impact of the fall using the support of the palms of your hands as a suspension over the surface. If you are wearing Palm Hand Protection, the exercise will be much more comfortable.
- When jumping off the surfskate, try to maintain your posture and lighten your body weight when stepping on the ground.
- Allow yourself to fall gently forward, placing both hands on the ground to cushion the fall.
- Create a bridge between your arms and the tips of your toes on the ground to protect your knees and keep your head turned to protect your face.
- Use the strength of your arms and legs to push against the ground and gradually disperse the energy towards the forearm muscle.
Think quickly, because if there is still a lot of accumulated energy, you may injure your elbow. In that case, you will need to continue dissipating the impact of the surf skate fall through a quick lateral roll over the shoulders. I will explain this other technique next!
Front Fall At High Speed (Zempo Kaiten Ukemi)
This is the most important fall break technique you need to learn. In most cases of failure while performing surfskate tricks, you will be at high speed. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to our step-by-step guide on the Zempo Kaiten Ukemi fall break technique. Practice this technique on a comfortable surface so that you are prepared to avoid any accidents.
